Teen portraits - Saara

Visiting Australia for a summer Christmas must have been quite the climate shock for this gorgeous girl who hails from the same country as Santa Claus himself. Her family surprised her with her first ever portrait session and as you can see, the heat didn't bother her one bit.

If she was nervous about two photographers pointing their cameras at her and guiding her through poses, she certainly didn't show it. We ended up with so many beautiful images, we almost felt like she would have too many to choose from!

Family photography - multiple families

Every few years when these families get together for Christmas they make the effort to organise a family photo session. What a fantastic way to capture the growth of their broods!

This shoot was fantastic from a photographer's perspective. With so much experience in front of the camera, everyone, from Grandma to the kids, knew exactly what they were doing and what they wanted when it came to posing. This would be the largest family group we have photographed, and the whole session was over in the blink of an eye!

We were also extremely impressed with their colour coordination, don't they look fantastic?

Merry Christmas!

Thank you to our family, friends, Facebook fans and our fabulous clients for making 2013 such a wonderful year. We look forward to what 2014 has in store!

We know how busy weekends can be when your kids are at school. Why not take advantage of having the kids at home for the school holidays and organise a family photo session?

Family Portraits

The love in this family shone straight out of their beautiful smiles. It was such a pleasure to watch the dynamics between mum, dad and the kids. There seemed to be a peace that radiated from them all, even with their gorgeous girl tearing around and enjoying the wide open space!

We look forward to seeing this family in the new year for a very special ceremony to welcome their little man.

Family Portraits - On the move

One of the most common complaints we hear from parents is that their little ones won't sit still long enough to have their photo taken. While it is true that toddlers have better things to do than smile for the camera, it doesn't mean that you have to rule out family portraits, quite the opposite!

Capturing a family means much more than smiling for the camera - it means following the kids around and watching them play, letting them interact with their siblings and their mum and dad just like they do every day. If you're lucky, you'll be able to snatch a few quiet and peaceful moments when the little ones slow down and take a breath...

Pampered Pets

The splashing stopped and Duke looked up at us with mournful eyes as if to say "What have I done?" The urge to explore the rock pools disappeared quickly, just as he was halfway out of the water, his front paws touching dry land and his back legs refusing to budge.

The first few minutes of this pet photography session very nearly spelled disaster. Mum and dad got a little wet retrieving Duke, but the combination of a short walk and a hot day meant that both Duke and his companion Prils were soon dry and happy again.

Family Portraits

Family portraits sure have changed since the days when dressing up in your Sunday finest, popping down to the local department store, standing in a line across a dull backdrop and saying 'cheese' was the norm.

Today's family portrait is one that captures your family as they are, just as you see them. Relaxed or posed, dressed up or dressed down, indoors or out - the most important goal of a family photo session is to capture a real and true image of your loved ones. An image that will make you smile every time you see it. Sounds corny but it's true!

Family Portraits - Baby Blues

No need for Photoshop here folks, those baby blues are au naturale. It's unsurprising to hear that strangers often compliment these little ones on their eyes, and they sure do know how to bat their long lashes in return.

Under the watchful eye of a posse of stuffed animals this little man impressed us as one of the most patient toddlers we have ever photographed. Thanks go to this lovely family, the shoot was lots of fun!

Family Portraits - Pet Edition

Around 65% of Australian families own a pet and we love them dearly. We pamper them with treats and toys, we groom them and exercise them, we let them live inside our homes and sleep at the foot of the bed. Pets are very much a part of the family, so why wouldn't we include them in a family portrait?

Buster was a well behaved and exuberant subject. With the aid of a few squeaky toys and some tasty treats we were even able to get a few shots of him with his tongue inside his mouth...

Photo tip: It is particularly hard to photograph animals with black or dark fur indoors, and using a flash doesn't often do them any favours. Lots of natural light is a must, and you'll need to increase your shutter speed if they are on the move!

Newborn Photography - Welcome to the Silver Eyes family

Being on the other side of the camera for a newborn and sibling photography session was a learning experience - I now understand what it's like for mums who want to poke and prod and twist and turn their little ones into that 'perfect' pose.

We can certainly say as photographers that any session taking photos of babies will be guided by the baby (sorry mum and dad). If you're lucky they will sleep for some of the session and tolerate the rest. No matter what, your precious bundle is beautiful just as they are, and that's what we hope to capture for you during a newborn session.

A voucher for a newborn photography session is a lovely gift for a mother-to-be.

Maternity Photography - a snapshot of a family

One of the Silver Eyes Photography team got a taste of what it's like on the other side of the camera in this Mother-To-Be session. If you're the person in your family who always has the camera in hand, you may know what it's like to be missing from your family pics, so this was a real treat!

You don't need to be pregnant or have a new baby in the family to organise a photo session - your family is growing year by year and you know how quickly those years go by. There is no better time than right now to capture a beautiful snapshot of your family.

Family Portraits - Watching them grow

We had a lot of fun with this family photo session. The kids were delightfully cheeky and well practised at posing for pictures—their mum and dad have made sure to have the kids photographed on a regular basis. After all, they do grow so quickly!

Champagne and limousines

This photo session around Lake Burley Griffin for this loved up couple came with the added bonus of the inclusion of a 1934 Packard Limousine. What a treat it was to see such a beautiful antique in such pristine condition!

To celebrate their first wedding anniversary, these lovebirds hired their wedding car as part of their session—definitely the largest prop we have worked with so far!

Portrait Photography - Children

As we walked between locations this little charmer insisted on holding hands with the photographers, chatting away a mile a minute with an infectious smile and boundless energy.

She smiled and giggled her way through each pose, taking direction like a seasoned model. Once we were done she was up and running, burning off some of that boundless energy in preparation for the next shot.

Whoever said you should never work with children had never met Miss Abbey, that's for sure!

Special thanks to Canberra for turning on such a beautiful spring day

Maternity photography

There are lots of things to capture in a maternity photo shoot—mum and dad together, older siblings, cute little toys and props—but of course the most important thing you want to capture is that lovely belly.

After baby arrives it is easy to forget just how big you grew and what it felt like to show off your big round belly. Pregnancy is definitely a time in your life that you want to capture!

Newborn photography

Photographing this beautiful bub was a real pleasure after shooting a maternity session for her gorgeous mum. It has been lovely to be invited to be a part of their journey so far.

Wishing all of the dads out there a Happy Father's Day!

Newborn photography

Photographing babies is wonderful but can certainly be a challenge. There is nothing you can do to bribe these tiny creatures, nothing you can do to 'direct' them—you just have to keep them safe, comfortable, warm, well-fed (well, mum takes care of this part) and then you let them direct the session! Luckily their movements and poses are naturally cute so you just have to be poised, camera at the ready, to capture the magic.

We had the pleasure of shooting a family photo session in the lead up to the arrival of this little princess.

Photography around Canberra

Part of the beauty of Canberra is that it truly is the 'Bush Capital'the city itself as well as the surrounding regions offer lots of opportunities for photographers to capture something a little different. We had the pleasure of traveling just over the ACT border to shoot some photos of this gorgeous family (including dogs and chooks) on their property.

Winter photo sessions

Winter in Canberra is just as beautiful as any other time of year for photo sessions. The days are usually clear and sunny, and the low golden light in the afternoons brings out the rich colours in the trees.

There is certainly a lovely, cosy feel to the photos when your subjects are all rugged up with cardigans, blankets and teddy bears. The rosy cheeks are perhaps the only giveaway that it was quite a chilly afternoon...

Portrait sessions

It's not often that people treat themselves to an individual portrait session, but it's something we highly recommend! We find that the most common time that someone will have a portrait session is to mark a milestone, in this case a significant birthday. What a lovely idea!

Tips for photographing children

Photographing little ones can be a big adventure, full of highs and lows! We've put together a few tips that will hopefully help you take beautiful photos of your kids.

Anyone who has ever tried to direct a child in a photo shoot knows that it can be a bit like herding cats - pointless, frustrating, chaotic, and amusing for other people to watch.

Our biggest tip would have to be - relax! Capturing the essence of your child, their quirks and their personality, won't happen by barking orders at them or forcing them to pose. Let them be the guides (while you follow at a close distance with your finger poised on the shutter of course).

Try and focus on the little things you love about them, the way they bite their lip when concentrating, the way they grip their favourite teddy, or the streaks of paint on their cheeks during arts and crafts. Let them play, run, make a mess, sing songs, dance, jump in puddles, laugh - one day when you look back on your photos you'll be glad you captured them just as they were.

Interiors

We were commissioned to begin cataloging the work of a local builder who is looking to expand his business and develop a web presence displaying his beautifully built homes.

Photographing interiors in this fashion was fairly new to us and a great chance to improve our skills. In theory, with the right lens (typically something starting around a 16mm equivalent like this or this) and a tripod, photographing interiors should be easier because the subject doesn't move right?

While this much is true, the wide angle lenses needed to capture a room also come with quite a bit of distortion at their widest end. This is where post processing with some of Photoshop's handy features comes in.

There is also a fine line in interior or real estate photography between showing the entirety of a room in its best light, and misrepresenting the size and shape of the room completely - something to be avoided, especially if trying to sell a house!

Ultra wide angle distortion - fixed!

Family photo sessions

Some people like to have a photo session on a regular basis to chronicle the growth of their family, and sometimes it is a milestone that prompts a shoot such as the impending arrival of a new addition.

One could only hope to look as gorgeous and as radiant as this mum-to-be only a few weeks away from her due date!

We had the pleasure of following up with a newborn photography session after baby girl's arrival.

Maternity photography

A maternity photo shoot is beautiful at any time of year. In warmer weather there is the opportunity for bare bellies and long flowing dresses. The cooler weather lends itself to lots of layers and accessories as well as the opportunity for bright colours to really make the photo pop!

We later had the opportunity to photograph the daughter of this gorgeous mum-to-be.

Resin Dew

If you haven't done so already you should definitely check out local Canberra jewellery maker Resin Dew. These products are just so gorgeous! Lots of colour, so many fun designs, and so affordable that you could easily justify having a pair of earrings for every day of the week (or month).

We had some fun practising our product photography and we were pretty happy with the results. Let us know what you think!

Sara

What a pleasure it was to shoot the gorgeous Sara! She was such a natural in front of the camera and managed to radiate warmth on a cold autumn day.

This location is fast becoming one of our favourites, with a mix of evergreen and deciduous trees making it a great spot for photos in any season.

Hello and welcome!

Our names are Maarit and Debbie and we are two friends who share a passion for photography. We decided to join forces to take our hobby one step further and that is how Silver Eyes Photography came to be.

Maarit brings her beautiful skills behind the lens and her growing interest in graphic design to this venture, the latest step in a lifelong passion for photography. Debbie's love for photography and her exceptional talent have given her international glory, recently winning first place in the International Garden Photographer of the Year - Beauty of Plants category. Debbie has also had her work appear in a number of magazines and on a magazine cover.

Whilst our focus is on beautiful portraits of mothers-to-be, babies, children and families, we love to experiment and will consider almost any subject that you may need photographing! Our Facebook page is where we showcase some of our client portrait images. On the Silver Eyes Photography blog we will also be showcasing other works that we have been doing and current projects we are working on. We hope you enjoy what you see as much as we enjoy what we do!
